Opetaia Announces Himself as a Kiwi Contender

Opetaia Announces Himself with Dominant Debut Victory
Five-length debut win puts exciting 3YO firmly on the radar for $4 million NZB Kiwi
A stunning debut performance by Opetaia (Hello Youmzain x Medal O’Rose) has marked the talented three-year-old as one of the most exciting emerging prospects in New Zealand racing, following a dominant 5.8-length victory at his first raceday appearance.
Purchased for just $40,000, Opetaia represents an outstanding piece of buying by Inspire Racing in partnership with leading New Plymouth trainer Allan Sharrock, and the colt now finds himself firmly under consideration for a slot in the $4 million NZB Kiwi, New Zealand’s richest race.
The manner of the win was what impressed most. Despite being on debut, Opetaia travelled strongly throughout, quickened decisively, and put the race to bed with authority, drawing away from his rivals to score by a widening margin. The performance suggested not only natural speed, but composure and class well beyond his experience.
By first-season sire Hello Youmzain, one of Europe’s most exciting young stallions, Opetaia is out of Medal O’Rose, a mare who has already shown her ability to produce quality. The colt has developed into a strong, athletic type and has continued to thrive with racing, giving connections confidence that there is significant upside still to come.
Trainer Allan Sharrock was understandably pleased with the result, noting the colt’s professionalism and raw ability, while also emphasising that the performance confirmed what the stable had seen at home.
While any talk of major targets remains measured, connections have confirmed that Opetaia is now under active consideration for the NZB Kiwi, with his debut effort immediately elevating him into discussions for elite-level opportunities later in the season.
For Inspire Racing, the victory represents another example of their ability to identify value in the market and turn it into racetrack success.
“Wins like this are why we do what we do,” said Inspire Racing. “To buy a horse for $40,000, develop him patiently, and see him perform like that on debut is hugely rewarding. Opetaia looks a horse with a big future.”
With confidence, class, and explosive talent already on display, Opetaia’s journey is only just beginning and New Zealand racing fans will be watching closely.
